NLC, TUC Nationwide Strike, Edo State Civil Service Secretariat Locked

Benin City, In a significant escalation of ongoing labour disputes, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) initiated a nationwide strike on Monday, 3rd June 2024 effectively paralyzing operations at the Edo State Secretariat.
The strike, aimed at protesting the Federal Government’s inadequate minimum wage policies, has resulted in a complete halt of civil service activities across the state.
As the sun rose over Benin City, it became evident that the strike would have far-reaching implications. Security personnel and union members were seen preventing civil servants from accessing the State Secretariat, a vital hub for government operations in Edo State.
Members of the Edo State chapter of the NLC, emphasized the necessity of the strike. “We are left with no choice but to take this drastic step. The Federal Government’s failure to implement a living wage has left many of our members struggling to make ends meet. This strike is a call to action for better pay and improved working conditions,” Osifo stated.
The impact of the strike was immediately felt by residents and businesses reliant on government services. Citizens who arrived at the secretariat for various administrative purposes were turned away, expressing frustration and confusion.
As the first day of the strike concluded, it was clear that the determination of the NLC and TUC, combined with the resolve of the Federal Government, set the stage for a prolonged standoff unless an agreement is reached. The coming days will likely see increased pressure on all sides to negotiate a settlement that addresses the core concerns of Nigeria’s labor force.
