Women’s Rights: Coordinator Office of the First Lady Pally Uhunoma Foundation

In a significant development aimed at promoting women’s empowerment and representation in government, the Uhunoma Foundation, a non-governmental organization dedicated to advancing women’s rights and leadership, met with the Coordinator Office of the First Lady, Edo State, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani at Government House.
The meeting, which was described as fruitful and constructive, brought together key stakeholders in the quest for increased women’s representation in governance.
The team was led by the Director General of Uhunoma Foundation, Mrs. Maryam Jibrin, the delegation engaged in a wide-ranging discussion with Mrs. Anani on the importance of women’s roles in leadership positions and nation-building.
Mrs. Anani, in her remarks, stressed the significance of women supporting one another and leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.
She highlighted the vital role women play in elections and nation-building, noting that their contributions are essential to the growth and development of society.
“Women are the backbone of our society, and their participation in governance is crucial to our nation’s progress,” she said.
Mrs Anani commended Uhunoma Foundation and acknowledged the group’s crucial role during the electoral process. “The Executive Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo will appointments more women in leadership positions. We believe that women have a lot to offer, and we know the Governor will give them more opportunities to serve in leadership positions,” she said.

The Uhunoma Foundation expressed appreciation for Governor Monday Okpebholo’s recent appointments of women to key positions in government. However, the group also emphasized the need for more representation of women in governance, citing the invaluable contributions women impact to the development of society.
The Director General of Uhunoma Foundation, Mrs. Maryam Jibrin said, “eligible women should be appointed as commissioners and other leadership positions. We kindly appeal to the Governor to consider more women for leadership roles”.
The Secretary of Foundation, Mrs. Josephine Iyamu, explained that the Uhunoma Foundation is an umbrella organization comprising over 50 registered groups with a membership strength of over 4,000 persons.
According to her, “We are a formidable, focused, and determined group that raises our voices on issues affecting women and young female politicians, advocating for what we believe in within the political space.
As the stakeholders dispersed, there was a sense of optimism and hope that the meeting would mark the beginning of a new era of increased women’s representation and empowerment in government.
The Uhunoma Foundation and the Office of the First Lady have pledged to work together to promote women’s empowerment and advance women’s rights in the state.
