In alignment with global efforts to eliminate viral hepatitis, the First Lady Designate of Edo State, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, has joined stakeholders worldwide to commemorate World Hepatitis Day.
This year’s theme, “Hepatitis: Let’s Break It Down,” emphasizes simplifying hepatitis services and expanding access to care.
Mrs. Anani highlighted the urgent need to dismantle systemic barriers hindering early diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, noting that hepatitis remains a leading cause of death globally due to lack of awareness, stigma, and insufficient access to healthcare services.
“We must not allow stigma, ignorance, or systemic obstacles to stand between our people and life-saving care,” she said, emphasizing the need for integrated services, community outreach, and early testing and treatment.
The First Lady Designate reaffirmed her commitment to advancing health initiatives prioritizing vulnerable groups, especially women and children.
She applauded Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration for strengthening primary healthcare and empowering frontline medical personnel.
Mrs. Anani called for greater collaboration among government ministries, NGOs, civil society, and private sector stakeholders to scale up public enlightenment campaigns and deploy mobile screening services to underserved communities.
She encouraged residents to take personal responsibility by utilizing available testing services and seeking prompt medical attention when symptoms arise.
World Hepatitis Day, observed annually on July 28, aims to raise awareness and catalyze action toward eliminating hepatitis by 2030.
