The Director General of the Edo State Health Insurance Commission (EDOHIC), Barrister Augusta Ikpea-Enaholo (Esq.), led an inspection team on a tour of key health facilities in the Edo Central Senatorial District as part of the commission’s Equity and Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF) Plan and to mark the commencement of the 2nd phase of the front-loading programme.

The DG underscored her commitment to ensuring that vulnerable populations in Edo State receive accessible and quality healthcare.

The tour began at the EDOHIS operations office in Ekpoma, where the DG and her compliance director met with the Head of Operations for the district. During this meeting, the DG stressed the importance of teamwork and urged all staff to actively contribute towards achieving the agency’s mandate, ensuring that the community experiences the tangible benefits of the health insurance scheme.

Throughout her visits, the DG addressed several operational challenges at various facilities across the district. At Ukpenu Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC), she was welcomed by the Matron who reported delays in accessing funds for essential drugs due to pending updates on accounts signatories. The DG assured that the matter would be expedited for prompt resolution.

At Ujoelen PHC in Ekpoma, the DG observed bureaucratic bottlenecks that were hindering the effective utilization of commission funds, thereby impacting the standard of healthcare delivery. Similarly, at Obeidu PHC, where the Matron briefed the team, it was noted that community enrollment in the scheme was low. In response, the DG advised that enhanced sensitization efforts, in collaboration with the Ward Development Committee, would be essential to boost participation.

The tour reached its highlight at the Model Primary Healthcare Centre in Irrua, which will also serve as the venue for celebrating the Governor’s 100 Days in Office with the registration of over one hundred vulnerable individuals into the health insurance scheme beginning from 16th to the 18th of this month.

By leading this initiative, the DG is actively working to ensure that the governor’s commitment to the overall wellbeing of residents is fully met. This proactive approach not only addresses the operational challenges identified during the tour but also translates the governor’s vision into tangible healthcare improvements for the vulnerable populations of Edo State.
